Let´s Talk Digital

“´The times are ´a changing´ “.

Indeed!

Now that the wedding of the year is over, let´s talk about something else. One of the most appealing aspects of London is the creativity that this city oozes. Designer? Photographer? Writer? It´s so much easier to develop your own creativity and meet others like you here. The same goes for marketers.

Technology has had a lot to do with this. Just think of the internet and all the gadgets we keep hearing about/ lusting after. I can´t help thinking that 100 years ago things were pretty much the same up to a certain extent. People tried to get used to the new scientific discoveries and inventions just like we have all needed to use e-mails to communicate with our friends, do internet banking or use social media. Language also needed to be adapted. Adertising, one of marketing tools, was not even recognised as a profession until after 1950´s, as TV series Mad Men reminds us.

It has the great advantage of allowing the quick production and dissemination of communications. To avoid problems, a ´netetiquette´ has been developed. Guidelines for the better use of social media have been developed too. E-mails used for marketing purposes are now even more targeted than ever to avoid bothering customers unnecessarily – or rather, not having any business at all. Even the use of the subject line and the ´from´ fields has been optimised. 10 years ago, we did not use Facebook nor LinkedIn nor video channels.

So many channels so readily available to produce comms products. There is so much creativity that it can be a little hard to keep up. Need not worry, help is at hand! Digital Shoreditch festival has just opened in what looks like a promising week full of interesting product reviews, new technology, uses of social media and, even, free gigs!

More on this later on this week.

See you soon!

It’s all very exciting, I just wish I wasn’t so utterly useless when it came to it. I think technology is starting to pass me by as I haven’t got a clue what the majority of gadgets do!

It’s great for my work. When I was at Uni and wondering what I was going to do for a living (knowing that teaching wasn’t for me) I would have never dreamt that I would end up being able to work from anywhere in the world and with agencies all over the place with just one laptop and an Internet connection.

    It’s truly amazing.
