What is it with cats on the internet? I’m sure that you will have noticed the huge amount of pictures and videos of cats on social media sites. Although many people like cats, other animals are really cute too. However, how many pictures of cute hedgehogs can you see in comparison? I thought I’d put down some of my thoughts and back them up together with an infographic on this matter.
This has often puzzled me. I know cat love goes back to the Egyptians, who were the first to domesticate them. But, I’d rather have dogs as pets than cats, even if I actually am quite independent myself. Even so, I tend to have more fun seeing pictures of cats.
I guess they may inspire certain type of feelings. Nathalie Nihai, a web psychologist, has mentioned that pictures of cats tend to make us feel good about ourselves. Still, why cats and not dogs or bunnies? How different do you feel about the pictures below?
It’s become insane, to the point that there is a crowdsourced Internet Cat Video Film festival held in the US. Internet users do search for them consciously (as I’ve just done). On You Tube, people search more for cats than dogs.
I think it may be not their cuteness that we are attracted at. Maybe it is something else. Coolness? Have you got any ideas?

On another note, I have to say that I have seen more foxes than cats in the streets of London as compared to other places.

I am not a cat person at all. A good dog picture will win me over every time. I just don’t get it about the obsession with cats.

I wonder how many of those pics are for real or just renderings. I’ve seen an article by Guy Kawasaki where it was clearly hard for me to make out the difference.

Tomcat Fightback was brought in to deal with a plague of mice and has since wiped ou the wildlife in the garden – like you I am at a loss to explain this cat obsession but they are cute aren’t they!

You don´t have to choose between cats and dogs, just enjoy their company and take care and respect of them.

Well, I was talking about the huge number of cat pics on the internet as opposed to pictures of other animals. I agree though – no need to choose between cats and dogs.
